Welcome to EMA

EMA is a consulting engineering firm specializing in decarbonization strategies, energy audits, LEED™ enhanced commissioning, ENERGY STAR® Award application filings and BERDO / BEUDO municipal energy filings. As a member of USGBC LEED, and ENERGY STAR® Partner EMA encourages LEED™ Commissioning and sustainable energy-saving carbon neutral Net Zero designs and major retrofits.

Since the onset of the COVID pandemic in early 2020, EMA has played an active role in significantly reducing transmission rates of airborne viruses such as SARS, TB and Influenza in high rise offices, town buildings and dozens of K-12 schools. One such design was featured on Boston’s local CBS news filmed on location at Franklin High School. These efforts resulted in earlier and more confident re-opening of offices, senior centers, libraries and schools.

Steve Di Giacomo, PE, CEM, BCxP, GBE founded EMA in 1996. Steve and his team have been providing decarbonization plans, energy audits and commissioning services throughout New England, NY, PA, NJ, MD, Ireland, Germany and Belgium.

Steve has recently completed UVGI Dosage-engineering design studies to inactive SARS-Co-V-2 encompassing 3 million square feet including Boston financial district high rise offices and assisted many New England towns re-open their public buildings, libraries, Senior Centers using UVGI lamp technology and HEPA filtration.

Steve is an AEE Certified Energy Manager, is certified by ASHRAE as a building commissioning processes management professional with thirty-five years of specialized Energy Engineering HVAC auditing, analysis, design, commissioning and facility operations experience with industrial, research, hospital, chemical, pharmaceutical and commercial facilities at both the site and corporate levels. He was a Wentworth Institute guest lecturer on energy techniques, co-taught a popular NESEA 3-hour workshop "Lessons Learned from High Performance Buildings: What Went Wrong? Why did they not Perform?", was a NESEA moderator, and a panelist at AEE Technology Roundtable events.. Mr. Di Giacomo has authored a number of articles on CO2 based demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) in both Engineered Systems Magazine and the Journal of Energy Engineering. Di Giacomo was designated by ENERGY STAR as a "Most Active Licensed Professional", certifying 80-100 buildings each year for ENERGY STAR Awards, as well as provides e-Filings for BERDO and BEUDO and other Municipal Ordinances.

Mr. Di Giacomo is the recipient of the 2018 Association of Energy Engineers’ Energy Professional Development (Trainer) Award for Region I encompassing MA NH ME VT CT RI NY NJ and DE.

Steve holds active Mechanical Engineering PE licenses in MA (37749), RI (6859), NY (075581), NJ (24GE03024600), PA (033707E) and ME (15294).
